BULKING UP WITH A BUNCH OF LIGHTWEIGHTS |
|
|
The end of the 1960s saw the dawn of a new era for the Ringling rail operations -- the lightweight cars were coming. Lots of them.
The decline in American passenger rail travel near the advent of Amtrak (1971) provided an unexpected windfall for several circus operators. Prime among them was Ringling Bros who acquired dozens of good used mainline passenger cars quite economically to supplement (and eventually replace) their current train of older heavyweight cars -- and even add a second and third train before the 1970s were out.
In 1969, Ringling Bros picked up their first big lot of lightweight modern passenger cars for conversion to circus train cars. The first batch came largely from the New York Central and the Rock Island. Others followed. These cars were used to create a whole new train - the Blue Unit in 1969 - with the current train then becoming the Red Unit train. In 1972, Ringling again scored big with a huge lot of used cars from the Union Pacific Railroad. The new UP cars led to the slow retirement of the remaining former US Army WWII Hospital cars from the Red Unit train. Some of the former hospital cars had been used as tunnel cars for hauling wagons. As these were permanently sidelined, new flat cars were acquired to serve that purpose.
From 1969 to 1994 it was common for cars to change their 2 digit (Red Unit) and 3 digit (Blue Unit) car numbers for many different reasons. (Note that these numbers only appeared with an "RB-" out front when written down or in printouts from 1969 to 1981, so we'll use that notation here. The letters "RB-" never appeared on the actual car sides.)
The circus was owned by toy maker Mattel from 1971 to 1982. Beginning in 1982, when the Felds purchased the circus from Mattel, 'RBX' was added ahead of the (still fluid) car numbers on the sides of the cars and in print. It wasn't until early 1995 that the RBBX system of permanent 5-digit car numbers was initiated. Listed here are Ringling car number(s) known to have been associated with a particular car and, ideally, the year(s) it has been seen in a photo wearing that number. The exterior appearance of many of these cars changed significantly over the years with recurrent modification and modernization for circus use.
As of 2020, some three years after the last circus performance, two of the Ringling lightweight cars were still in use by the company. RBBX 60010 and RBBX 40009 both served as structures at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation. In 2020, RBBX 60010 tied 41402 as the longest-serving lightweight Ringling rail car (48 years each). The Elephant Center - and the cars - changed hands in May 2020, so the tie may be an enduring one.
This
list is a work-in-progress -- and probably always will be.
