This
list is a work-in-progress -- and always will be, as these
cars move about from one owner to the next. The "types"
listed show their use on the auto-train, regardless of how
the cars were originally configured when built. Any additions/corrections
or photographs (past or present) you'd like to contribute
-- please email Todd. |

LOCOMOTIVES |
|
|
|
A
U36B built by GE 11/1971, builder's number 38031. Lettered
"BIG RED" on the sides of the cab - the SCL nickname
for the auto-train. The nickname originated with former SCL
employee Arnie Olson who became auto-train's VP of Operations
-- it referred to the locomotives' big red noses. All of the
auto-train U36Bs had Blomberg trucks. They could sometimes
be seen in freight service with the SCL and L&N, apparently
on loan to work off debt. |

"OL' SHEP" on the cab side above the number 4010,
apparently in honor of an SCL backshop employee whose last name

|
Originally
a 40' boxcar that FEC turned into a bay-window caboose (numbered
804) before auto-train added the cupola on top and eliminated
the bay-windows from the sides. In the early days, the auto-train
ran with the passenger cars at the rear of the train and flagmen
rode in the passenger cars. Later, the passenger cars were moved
ahead of the auto-carriers for the comfort of passengers (less
bumping/slack action) and this resulted in the need for cabooses.
Cabooses were also needed in the late 1970s when the train got
so popular -- and so long -- that it was split into two sections,
one consisting of passenger cars only, followed five minutes
later by one consisting of auto-carriers only. Additionally,
some bi-level auto carriers were modified to have crew quarters,
including caboose-like cupolas on top, thus eliminating the
need for a separate caboose. |
