auto-train
leased Steam Generator
669
Built
by EMD as Union Pacific
970B. To Amtrak 468 in 1972, retired 1974. Converted to steam
generator car and numbered 1919 in 1975. Renumbered 669 in 1977.
Leased by AT in 1981, but never painted AT colors.
To Alaska RR as P7 in 1982. To Feather River RR Society in 1989.
To UP in 1990. Restored to power for their Heritage Fleet and
renumbered 963B in 1993. Please email if you have a photo
of this car in any paint scheme.
The unit pictured here may not be 669, but it does illustrate that when auto-train Corp began working with Amtrak, the use of Amtrak's steam generators became attractive. Here, one of Amtrak's steam generators (possibly 669) is surrounded by auto-train cars on the Louisville-Sanford run at a time when auto-train and Amtrak were combining their trains on that route.
