The train moved attached to the end of regularly scheduled freight trains, so it had no dedicated locomotive. Locomotives would have come from B&O, C&O, Western Maryland, PRR, N&W, and New York Central railroads. |

The
cars of the WVCS were numbered 1-9. When the cars were sold to Montana, the bill of sale listed the seven display cars as originally N&W 130, C&O 78, 79, B&O 452, C&O 80, N&W 126 and B&O 457, not necessarily in the order listed here. |

Power/Entrance/Exhibit Car #1 was originally a New York Central Baggage Car with a 125 kW Caterpillar generator to supply electricity to the train cars. Also served as the entrance car with some displays. Easily identified by the large ventilation louvers on its sides. Donated by the railroad to the state of West Virginia. Sold in 1964 to the state of Montana for their 1964-1965 Montana Centennial Train. |

Dormitory Car #9 was originally PRR heavyweight sleeper URBANA, built in 1925 by Pullman-Standard as a 12-section, 1-drawing room sleeping car. Provided housing for rotating teams of college men serving as docents on the train. Loaned by the PRR to the West Virginia Centennial Special, and, later, the Montana Centennial Train in 1964. To Penn Central 8965 and retired in 1962. To Penn Central MofW 27420. Now at White Deer, PA. |
