The
following locomotives and railcars were acquired by the GPX company and conversions were in progress when the project ended. Several cars had their interiors completely removed in preparation for makeovers into fine parlor cars, etc. None of the cars or diesels received their intended GBX names or numbers (if they were ever even assigned). All of the cars were part of the American Orient Express in the 1990s and 2000s. Two proposed baggage/power cars and two proposed observation cars were not yet acquired when the project ended. |
GBX 614 JAMES CONLEY JUSTICE SR. - The last great steam locomotive built in the United States. The steam locomotive would have pulled the train (and without diesels) only part of the trip. The locomotive was moved to Clifton Forge, WV in 2011 and painted in its first of two green Greenbrier Presidential Express paint schemes. |
GBX 1 - A C39-8 Diesel. Likely former NSSX (National Salvage & Service) 8211. Ex-NS 8211. Exx-Conrail 6017. NSSX 8211 arrived at the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad in August 2010 for overhaul for the GBX, but was never given a GBX number. It would have been repainted where the cars were being refurbished -- Pottstown, PA. Two of the diesels would have been run back-to-back so they would not need to be turned at the end of the line. One diesel would have been stored in reserve on a rotating basis. To Pennsylvania Northeastern Railroad as their 8211. Scrapped in January 2021. |
GBX 2 - A C39-8 Diesel. Likely former NSSX 8202. Ex-NS 8202. Exx-Conrail 6004. Stored for the GBX (and run) at the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad from Oct 2010, but never given a GBX number. Sold to the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic in July 2012. |
GBX 3 - A C39-8 Diesel. Likely former NSSX 8207. Ex-NS 8207. Exx-Conrail 6012. Stored for the GBX at the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad from Oct 2010, but never given a GBX number. Sold to the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic in July 2012. |

THE O GAUGE MODEL TRAIN |
* |
* |
A model of the train was created by director Ross Rowland. The model was proposed to run on a layout in the lobby of the Greenbrier Hotel, as O guage model trains often did - and still do - during the winter holidays. Both MTH and Lionel subseqently produced GBX locomotives in O. |
GBX #1 SD70ACe Diesel Locomotive commissioned by Rowland and produced by Mr. John Finnin. An MTH model custom painted by Brion Boyles in October 2011. Paint scheme based on a painting by Bob Lorenz. |
MTH GBX #614 JAMES CONLEY JUSTICE SR. - Produced in O gauge by MTH Electric Trains in 2016, based on the GBX paint scheme worn by 614 at Clifton Forge, VA beginning in 2011. It is the only part of 'the model train' not commissioned by Rowland, but rather mass produced by railfan and model train maker Mike Wolf. |
Lionel GBX #1 SD70ACe Diesel Locomotive - In 2024, TrainWorld offered an exclusive Lionel O Gauge model of proposed Greenbrier Presidential Express #1. Lionel #2433870, an SD70ACe. |
MTH GBX #1 AC6000 Diesel Locomotive - In 2024, Patrick's Trains offered an exclusive MTH O Gauge model of proposed Greenbrier Presidential Express #1. MTH #20-21929-1, an AC6000. |

THE O GAUGE MODEL TRAIN |
* |
* |
The
cars of the GBX were not yet assigned their names and numbers when construction ended. The names shown here are from the O gauge model produced by John Finnin, John Ripp and Brion Boyles in 2013, with names and numbers supplied by the Greenbrier Express Company. The cars were named for presidents who have (mostly) stayed at the Greenbrier Hotel. A single full-size passenger car was partially painted in this color scheme before the project ended. The model was proposed to run on a layout in the lobby of the Greenbrier Hotel. |
