FORMER WWII US ARMY HOSPITAL CARS 1960-1972 |
After a three year hiatus from moving equipment and performers by rail, the former WWII US Army hospital cars were once again ready for action, but with some big changes. Though the train looked much the same on the outside, on the inside it was completely different. Several of the cars were gutted to create tunnel cars for holding new custom-made wagons. Other cars were gutted to become stock cars. Still more were completely refurbished as sleepers. The exteriors remained silver, but now with large Ringling text on banner graphics below the window line instead of a thin red stripe above the window line. This list only includes the train from 1960-1968, plus its transition to the Red Unit train when the Blue Unit came into being (with newly purchased lightweight cars) in 1969. Only a single car from this list made it to the Blue Unit train in 1969 - Car #124. The WWII Hospital Cars lasted as part of the Red Unit train until about 1972, before being replaced by more modern cars like the ones on the new Blue Unit train. This
list is a work-in-progress -- and probably always will be.

BUSINESS CAR JOMAR |
X |
BUSINESS CAR JOMAR was John Ringling North's heavyweight private car. Its name was a contraction of the first names of John and Mable Ringling. For years it would run on excursions and with the circus train, painted silver and with louvers on the windows, much like the former hospital cars. It traveled with the train occasionally into the 1960s. |

Circus World Theme Park and Boardwalk and Baseball - After two years on the road for the US Army and another 25 for the traveling circus, the former hospital cars were ready for retirement. But for over half of them, a curtain call awaited. In the spring on 1974 fifteen of the cars were incorporated into Ringling's newest venture, Circus World, a theme park near Orlando, Florida. For the next 13 years they would serve in every capacity from kennel to gift shop. Most of the cars survived to serve another three years at successor theme park Boardwalk and Baseball. Sixteen Ringling cars were sold to a private owner in 1989 - most if not all of them former WWII hospital cars. Two were sold at auction in 1989 and served as Grandpa's Steakhouse in Cocoa, FL through the spring of 2018. |
