THE ULTIMATE CIRCUS TRAIN |
On September 28, 2010, history was made as the ultimate circus train rode the rails between Speers, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado. The world's largest operating steam locomotive pulled the world's longest private train. The Ringling portion of the train was 61 cars long. The Union Pacific added four cars of their own, including a dome car (a first for a circus train?), for a total of 65 cars. The train weighed over 6000 tons and stretched nearly 6100 feet. There are only 5280 feet in a mile. Duty for pulling this massive train was turned over to the world's largest operational steam locomotive -- Union Pacific Challenger #3985. The Ringling/UP train, for now, remains the longest and heaviest train pulled by a steam locomotive in the 21st century. |

Sept 28, 2010 UNION PACIFIC LOCOMOTIVE NOTES |
Union Pacific Challenger Steam Locomotive 3985 was built in 1943 by ALCo in Schenectady, New York. The locomotive was one of 105 articulated 4-6-6-4 Challenger-type locomotives produced for the Union Pacific. Only two remain. The locomotive was retired in about 1962 and restored to operation in 1981 and was, at the time it pulled the Ringling train, the world's largest operating steam locomotive. Its home base is Cheyenne, WY. |

Sept 28, 2010 RINGLING BLUE UNIT CIRCUS CAR NOTES |
Note that RBBX numbers were fixed, but House Numbers and Unit colors (Red or Blue) could change. These were the House Numbers on the Blue Unit cars on September 28, 2010.
The elephant stock cars, normally very near the locomotives, were placed well back in the train, far from the commotion surrounding the steam locomotive.
