THE END OF THE TENTED SHOWS |
In 1956, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus stopped being a tented show. From then on, all preformances would take place inside sporting arenas. It was also decided the circus would move by road on nine semi tractor trailers. This abruply sidetracked the 79 rail cars Ringling had on hand. It also put an end to the annual trips some of the train cars were making to Cuba. From 1957 to 1959 the circus moved almost entirely over the nation's highways. But there was an exception that kept Ringling on the rails all the while.
The horses and elephants still needed to move by rail in stock cars. Leased PRR baggage cars 6084, 6090 and 6094 were the trio chosen to carry on Ringling's railroading tradition, albeit tied to the tail of various regularly scheduled passenger trains. |

1957-1959 RINGLING RAILCAR NOTES |
Stock Car 6084 MOZART - Carried the show's elephants. 6084 was a leased Pennsylvania Railroad class B70a 'scenery' baggage car riding on 6-wheel 3D5P2 trucks, used by Ringling as a stock car, built in 1928. It had two sliding side doors, one 6 foot wide and one 10 foot 10 inches. One end of the all-steel car had a full width end door, ideal for large pieces of theatrical scenery -- or large animals.
