Sign near boxcar
during the State Fair, 1999.
According to
historian Lt. Col. Manuel A. Conley, originally the state’s Capitol
Museum in Jefferson City was to permanently exhibit the car, but
the building was a foot too short for the boxcar.
That landed
it in prison -- inside the walls of the Jefferson County State Penitentiary
to be exact.
There it sat
for nearly a year, until the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Forty
& Eight Society sponsored its move to the fairgrounds at Sedalia.
