NOTES |

|
A kick-off cross-country promotional tour was planned with one locomotive, one sleeper, one dining car (with galley), one lounge car (cinema), and the spa car -- plus one motorcoach. The short train would have visited several cities with the help of Amtrak and Norfolk Southern, mostly in the southwest and southeast where the train would not normally go. The following cities and sites were scouted, but no firm itinerary of dates, cities or the routes between them seems to have been finalized. |

Los Angeles, CA |
One thing was for sure -- the Marlboro Unlimited Train would have been too tall for the 'station tracks' with their rain canopies. The terminal's Garden Tracks were considered as an alternative. |

San Diego, CA |
Displaying the train across the street from the convention center was under consideration, though not by the railroad (it was their main line). |

Las Vegas, NV |
Displaying the train behind the RIO Hotel was a possibilty being considered. |

Displaying the train on track being installed for the 1996 Olympics was being considered. |

Richmond, VA |
Ending the tour with a stop at the Philip Morris plant was a prime consideration for employee functions. A site downtown was sought for other events. Afterward, the train might have been stored in Richmond until consumer trips began. |

NORTHBOUND ITINERARY |
* |
* |
Northbound trips were originally planned to run from Phoenix, AZ to Tucson, the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, NM, the Royal Gorge, Glenwood Springs, Cheyenne, WY, and Denver, CO -- with Southbound trips basically reversing the path, adding an overnight in Steamboat Springs, CO, but deleting Tucson. Before the project ended, plans had evolved to base the train in Denver, Colorado and run north on a six day trip to Billings, Montana, with the Southbound route following much the same path in reverse. Ten trips for 100 sweepstakes winners and their guests were planned for the warm months in both 1996 and 1997, for a total of 4000 passengers over two seasons. Seven other training and VIP trips would each have carried about 100 passengers each. |
