Marlboro Unlimited Train
#5 PAINTED DESERT
32 Person Staff Sleeper
Built by Budd in 1959 as 24SB/8DB Slumbercoach #10800 LOCH TAY for the New York Central. To NP #333 (no name) in 1962. To BN on merger. To Amtrak 2031 LOCH TAY, later 2089 LOCH TAY. To Rader Railcar/Project Thunder. Staff room numbers were to be 501-526, according to signage designed for the interior.
It's possible only the (passenger) sleeping cars were going to have exterior names applied, so this car might not have had its name on the car side.
Designated 'Contract Car 04' by the builder, Rader Railcar.
PAINTED DESERT would have been the first "named" car on the Marlboro Unlimited. As illustrated here, the car name appears in a font called Copperplate Gothic, identical or very similar to the font used on the Marlboro Unlimited motor coaches that were delivered by Prevost in early 1996. The positioning of the lettering is meant to mirror the positioning of lettering on the domed passenger cars. This isn't necessarily where the lettering would have ended up on the real crew car; it's just a 'best guess'.
The real car is seen here numbered as 1230 KRXX in 2009 in private ownership at Strasburg, CO, sans trucks.
