Chessie Steam Special
#2101A
Aux Tender

The 2101 locomotive had been running with an auxiliary water tender/tool car since the early days of the American Freedom Train. The extra tender continued to follow the locomotive throughout the run of the Chessie Steam Special.

The tender originally came from a New York Central 4-8-2 Mohawk locomotive. According to Fritz Milhaupt's research, it came from L-3b #3042 and had spent years as a diesel fuel 'tank' in the rail yard at Van Wert, OH.

The aux tender provided extra water to the locomotive to extend its endurance. The former coal bunker was covered over and became a tool shop.

The colors and the graphic of a horse racing an early locomotive were a collaborative effort of Franklyn J. Carr of Chessie System and noted railroad artist Bob Lorenz.

Some members of the Chessie Staff and the Steam Locomotive Corporation of America crew took a photo by the aux tender at the end of the second season in 1978.

After the run of the Chessie Steam Special, a roundhouse fire damaged the locomotive and its tenders.

The aux tender was not restored and is in the collection of the the National New York Central Railroad Museum.
