21st Century Limited
Locomotive
3001
Former New York Central 4-8-2 Mohawk steam locomotive #3001 was proposed to lend a hand to locomotive 614 in hauling the heavy 34 car train. The big 4-8-2's usual tender might well have been swapped out for the (slightly larger/well-baked) Mohawk tender that was used as auxiliary water tender/tool shop #1A for former Reading locomotive 2101 on the American Freedom Train and the Chessie Steam Special. The 3001 was and is owned by the National NYC RR Museum in Elkhart, IN.
The 21st Century Limited never got the 3001, but the museum did get the aux tender. Today, the two are displayed together in Elkhart.
Image: 21st Century Limited promotional artwork by Robert Skiba. In the artwork, the tender looks like a NYC Hudson's tender (based on its short length), but it's likely a condensed rendition of 2101's aux tender from the AFT/CSS.
