Train of Tomorrow
Locomotive #765
Locomotive #765 was a 2000 horsepower EMD E7A demonstrator built at LaGrange, IL in April 1947. Its road number came from its order number, E765. The locomotive pulled the Train of Tomorrow through all 65,000 miles of its US-Canada tour.

The entire train was sold to the Union Pacific in March 1950 -- and the locomotive was renumbered 988.
The train's first assignment was as the City of Seattle, traveling between Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. The loco and cars soon went into pool service and were often run with other UP equipment.

765/988 was retired in Dec 1963 and traded in for, or rebuilt at, EMD as UP E9A #912 (likely salvaging some of 765's components). UP 912 lives on as NYC 4096 at the Danbury Railway Museum in Danbury, CT, though just how much of 765 survives is still in need of research. Please email if you know more.
